Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - October 6, 2015

Aloha kakou

I can't believe it is almost Thanksgiving (in Canada). In 3 days I will have been married to the best woman in the world for 16 years. She is as beautiful as a sunset at Hanalei Bay. Tonight at my jam we will sing that song to not only honour the location and island of Kaui, but to also remind me how lucky I am to have met such a wonderful person. When you see Hanalei by moonlight... Think of soneone you are madly in love with!

We are at the Shack again tonight. See you then!

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - September 29, 2015

The hardest thing to deal with during the fall is trying to figure out how to dress for the weather. In the mornings it is cold here in Calgary so you wear pants, a long sleeve shirt and perhaps a sweater, but by lunch time the sun has warmed the air and earth so much you need to change into shorts and a t-shirt. Well today I figured out a solution to this problem. Go to Hawaii!!!

I know. That doesn't help those who can not go to Hawaii, but I have the next best thing... My Kanikapila tonight at the shack and a video from the 2015 Hawaii Ukulele Festival featuring Jake Shimabukuro! See you tonight my friends!

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - September 22, 2015

Aloha Kakou,

Hooray!!! It's Tuesday! Another week has past and it's time for us to gather once more and JAM!!! I have watched and listened to many negative things this past week. Cops beating people, people beating cops, children disappearing, radical Muslim protests and right wing Christian dingbats proliferating intolerance and hate, political leaders posturing and tricking us to vote for their party and.... Trump! It's enough to make you crawl under the covers and hide. Well let's pull back those blankets and sing out the negative tonight at my Kanikapila. We are back at the shack tonight and until November (once my sons football season is over). In case you have forgotten, here's the info:

Aloha kakou,

It's Tuesday again and time for us to jam once more. I'm not sure about you, but it feels like time is speeding up. I can't believe 7 days have past since we were strumming and singing together. Well make sure you warm up and stretch those fingers because tonight we are gonna strum and sing like it's 1999.... Oh wait.... 2009..... DOH.... 2019? When was the world supposed to end again? If you remember then let's play like it's the last day on earth (I'm not saying that I want the world to end).

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - September 8, 2015

Aloha kakou,

Another week has passed. It's getting colder. I can feel the season changing quickly. With the change of the season different stresses and hurdles will command our attention. For example I now have to put on more clothing when I go outside to stay protected and warm. Soon I will be scrapping snow off my car windshield. My kids now have homework every day. These things may overwhelm me sometimes, but when they do I stop, grab my uke and sing out the stress. I may feel like a baby turtle in the huge sea of life, but playing my uke and singing makes that ocean smaller and easier to navigate. If you are feeling the stress of the season too, come out tonight to my Kanikapila and we'll sing it out of our system together. Perhaps you need healing too. If so, see you at my shack tonight!

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - September 1, 2015

Aloha kakou

It's back to school for many children today. I remember those mixed feelings of sadness, excitement and anticipation of the first day of school. It was always good to see my friends again, but I was not excited about doing math or biology. Now that I no longer a student in that brick and mortar building, my schooling happens everyday out in the world. I learn something new all the time. One of my teachers in life and music is the extremely talented Keola Beamer. He has taught me the true meaning of Aloha. He is an excellent teacher. Very patient, gentle and kind. Some people call him "Mr. Nahenahe" . Nahenahe ……is one of the most beautiful words in the Hawaiian language… one definition of the word in the Pukui and Elbert dictionary is “soft….a gentle voice”. Not only is his slack key guitar playing nahenahe, but also his personality. Whenever I am in a tight situation I think of him and immediately try and become more nahenahe. It's easy to do when you mix in an abundance of aloha. Tonight let's celebrate learning and inspiration with some good old nahenahe ukulele playing here at my shack.

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - August 25, 2015

Aloha kakou,

Another week has past and it is time to kanikapila (jam) once more. This week we explore the meaning of the word Aloha.

The word aloha derives from the Proto-Polynesian root *qarofa, and ultimately from Proto-Polynesian.[3][4][5] It has cognates in other Polynesian languages, such as Samoan alofa and Māori aroha, also meaning "love."[5]

folk etymology claims that it derives from a compound of the Hawaiian words alo meaning "presence," "front," "face," or "share;" and ha, meaning "breath of life" or "essence of life." Although alo does indeed mean "presence," etc. by itself, the word for "breath" has a long A (), whereas the word aloha does not.

So come out tonight and share your ha with us at the shack

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - August 18, 2015

Aloha Kakou

Howzit? I hope you are all hanging loose. I'm enjoying these last few days of summer and showing off my Shaka. What is this Shaka I speak of? My high paid model below is demonstrating for me.

Hang Loose Brah!

Hang Loose Brah!

Here's what it means:

The shaka sign, sometimes known as "hang loose", is a gesture often associated with Hawaiiand surf culture. It consists of extending the thumb and smallest finger while holding the three middle fingers curled, and gesturing in salutation while presenting the front or back of the hand; the hand may be rotated back and forth for emphasis. The shaka sign was adopted from local Hawaiian culture and customs by visiting surfers in the 1960s, and its use has spread around the world.

Hawaiians use the shaka to convey the "Aloha Spirit", a concept of friendship, understanding, compassion, and solidarity among the various ethnic cultures that reside within Hawaii, lacking a direct semantic to literal translation. The shaka can also be used to express "howzit?", "thanks, eh?", and "all right!" Drivers will often use it on the road to communicate distant greetings and gratitude.

In American Sign Language, the shaka is one of the two signs used to refer to surfing.[citation needed] In California, the shaka sign may be referred to as "hang loose" or "hang ten"- both associated with surfer culture.

A symbolic interpretation of this kind and peaceful gesture can draw on the fluid dynamics of surfing in which the shape of the hand shows the use of strength of wave to move harmoniously from peak to valley to lofting exit. This is represented by the uplifted pinky as point of departure to the power slope, the three folded middle fingers as the power of the wave in its rolling face, and the return to a lower peak and lofting exit for turning on the ramp of thumb. This gesture in this way could also be used to represent the Taoist concept of wu wei, or effortless effort of going with the flow.[citation needed]

The gesture enjoys common use in American hang gliding culture, for both sentiment and word play, in part due to the simultaneous rise of surfing and hang gliding in California in the 1960s and 70s. It is also widely used among skydivers.

Along coastal Brazil, the shaka sign, known as the "hang loose", is a common gesture; it is also associated with the Brazilian jiu jitsu community internationally.[1]

There are three textese glyphs for the shaka sign - \.../, \, / and \m/ - the first known use of the first two is in c. 2006. The third version, with a lower case 'm' bearing more resemblance to a hand's three middle fingers, c. 2009.[2]

So.... Come to my shack tonight to share some aloha spirit and hang loose.

Pirate Jim's Kanikapila - August 11, 2015

Aloha kakou,

Howzit? I hope you all survived the flash floods and hail covered grounds last week. The rain and such has interrupted our jam swapping schedule so far this month so we will be back at my shack once again this week. I look forward to our Kanikapila all week long.

What does kanikapila mean? Well I can help you with that.

Kanikapila is a style of Hawaiian music produced in an impromptu jam session, most commonly taking place at a beach, or family gathering. The term comes from kani which means sound.[1] and pila which means any string instrument in the Hawaiian language.[2]

Over the last few decades it formed into a conceptual style reflecting more emphasis on acoustic instruments including the ukulele and free following speed to reflect the emotion of the players. The term has started making its way in the dialog of mainland US musicians as well.

One way that the kanikapila style music has made its mark in popular culture is songs like "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole where he takes two songs ( "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World" ) mashes them together to form an entirely new song. This is common element of the kanikapila style.

It is a popular custom to end kanikapila sessions the same way with the song "Hawaii Aloha" written by 19th century Christian minister, Lorenzo Lyons. Kanikapila groups include the Experience Paradise Project.

Another definition is: To play music together in Hawaiian. Singing usually accompanied by ukulele and/or guitar. Very common anywhere in Hawaii.

Braddah 1: Eh, we go kanikapila at your house tonight.
Braddah 2: Shootz, shootz.

Pirate Jim's Ukulele Jam - August 4, 2015

What animal are you? What animal represents you and your family? In Hawaiian mythology, an ʻaumakua (often spelled aumakua) is a family god, often a deified ancestor. The Hawaiian plural of ʻaumakua is nā ʻaumākua, although in English the plural is usually ʻaumakuas. Nāʻaumākua frequently manifested as animals such as sharks or owls. Nā ʻaumākua were worshipped at localities (often rocks) where they were believed to "dwell". The appearance of an animal one regarded as an ʻaumakua was often believed to be an omen (of good or ill). There are also many stories of nā ʻaumākua (in animal form) intervening to save their descendants from harm. It was extremely bad luck to harm a manifested ʻaumakua.

I believe my 'aumakua is the Honu or sea turtle. Discover your 'amakua tonight at my kanikapila.

We are back at my shack tonight. See you there friends.

My ukulele kumu Herb Ohta Jr. and one of my Ukulele suppliers, KoAloha Ukulele's made cameo appearances.
